When you start a business you usually have a vision. It starts with an idea or a dream and it’s pretty flippin’ exciting right?! You are a Visionary! To get your business moving you have to do everything. You do all things from admin to marketing – you suddenly have to learn it ALL!
There is a point that all my clients get to. They are making money and everything is great! But the ideas that keep coming and coming are sitting on the backburner because they can’t get out of the business for even a second. On the flipside, some business owners actually loose that sparkle they once had. They loose their creative vibes because they are bogged down in the stuff that doesn’t light them up and the creative ideas slip away.
What can you do about it?
You pretty much have two choices. Choice number one is that you take a step back, and lean into that Visionary role again, whilst you get other people in to help with the other moving pieces. Your business does well, it grows and you get your Mojo back. The other option is that you carry on doing it all and run the risk of burnout. It happens to us all at some point, but the sooner you recognise it the easier and better it will be for you.
So who might you need to help you get out of that rut?
Some ideas might me:
- Admin Virtual Assistant
- Social Media Assistant
- Digital Marketing Expert
- Virtual Office Manager/Online Business Manager
- Website Developer
- Graphic Designer
Now you might not need to use all of these people at the same time! But you do need to recognise that at some point you need to budget for it. If these are not your speciality areas, then you need to hand over these tasks to the people that are the experts! These are the ones who live and breathe this work day in and day out. They will get the work done far more quickly and far more effectively than you. It’s the truth of it!
At first, it can feel a bit Alien and a bit hard to let go. But you have to put your trust in them and that what they are doing will work. It can be super tempting to micro-manage them to start with. But that negates the whole point of bringing them on board as you’ll not have the time you need to work on your business vision.
Micromanaging is something we can all slip into from time to time. It can lead to procrastination and a need for perfection. Which leads to things just not getting done! The longer you put things off, the more boats you are going to miss!
Sometimes those boats are what can move your business forward – those are the things that give your business traction!
Instead of firefighting and being reactive, you’ll find yourself at the front of your industry and being proactive. It’s a pretty nice place to be right?
