Best Free Stock Image Websites

It’s no secret that using images in your social media posts creates more engagement with likes and shares.  When you start out on a budget you don’t want to be spending hundreds of pounds on images when you can source them for free.   Just remember though that you want it to still look original so dig deep into the stock available.

Research carried out by BuzzSumo.com looked at over 100 million Facebook updates over three months and found that updates with images had an amazing 2.3 times more engagement than those without!

Ideally we want to be sharing our own images of our products and daily adventures while making sure they are relevant to the post or blog we have created.

Not to mention ensuring you have a slick looking website.

But what if you need something a little bit different that is really going to stand out?

We aren’t all budding photographers with photoshop at our fingertips but we want to make sure the images we use are of good quality.

So where can you find free stock images that still look good?

Well you just do a google search don’t you? A quick right click, save, download and you can use whichever stock image you want. Right?

WRONG!

Images on the internet are very often covered by copyright law. They belong to SOMEONE ELSE. It’s very hard to tell from a google search who owns which image and the copyright attributed to it. You really don’t want to get yourself into a copyright war when there are lots of very good websites with free images that require no attribution.

Here are my top free stock image websites with NO attribution required.

WORD OF WARNING: At the time of writing this to the best of my knowledge these websites provide free, no attribution required images that you can use in any circumstance. It will either say next to the image or it will be VERY clear on their FAQ’s page. Please do double check before you download that nothing has changed.

1.Pixabay

At number one as it’s my ‘go to’ favourite! Easy to search toolbar. You can find smart office images to sunsets and quirky mashups – it has everything! If you use Hootsuite to manage your social media you may already know that Hootsuite pulls its ‘free to use images’ from Pixabay. Each image states its usage clearly and I’ve yet to find one that requires attribution.  Just remember its super popular though so you may not want to use images as part of your branding if they are going to conflict with every one else out there using it.

2.Picjumbo

www.picjumbo.com

This site has lots of great free images taken by the founder Viktor who says he is ‘travelling the World, taking photos and running this project where you can download & use ALL my pictures in your creative projects, whether it’s designing a WordPress theme, making a keynote or writing a blog post’. The FAQ’s state that everything is free to use commercially. There is also the option to go premium for even more images.

3. Gratisography

www.gratisography.com

‘The worlds quirkiest collection of free high resolution images’ and that they are! If you want quirky this is the site for you. All images are completely free for any type of use and no attribution required. Just watch for the Shutterstock advertising and make sure you click on the right image!

4. Nappy

www.nappy.co

I love this website! Nappy features exclusively black people and other ethnicities to ensure that we can all be more diverse in our usage of images. Specifically, they say “And that’s why we launched nappy; to provide beautiful, high-res photos of black and brown people to startups, brands, agencies, and everyone else. Nappy makes it easy for companies to be purposeful about representation in their designs, presentations, and advertisements.”

Add this one to your list for sure!

4.Picography

Probably not as extensive as some of the other websites but still worth a look if you can’t quite get at what you are looking for. The homepage states ‘Free to use however you like’ and they do seem to link from a lot of other free image websites giving you more ideas of where to search.

So there you go – my top free image websites!
